Mountain Island Tailrace Park Trail

Name:   Mountain Island Tailrace Park Trail

Last Visit:  2/29/2016

Description:  I was pleasantly  surprised by this place did not expect much but it is really a nice place to visit.

This trail follows the Catawba River from the Mountain Island Dam.  The main trail is only .6 miles one way has some good views of the dam and river.  Go down the trail until you come to a 'T' If you go left you can go down a short dirt path until it ends at a stream.  if your go right you go up a gravel road that turns into a dirt road then becomes somewhat less then a road getting muddy and rutted but you can go about a mile up an incline until you get to a rail road track in back of National Gypsum.   Once you leave the park I think this is a dirt road that Duke Energy uses but there is no traffic and as long as you stay off the power line right a way I don't think anyone would mind. There is a concrete barrier I think for erosion control and the park gates just keep going.
