Name: Green Swamp Preserve
Last Visit: Sept 2015
Description: This is a nature preserve run by the Nature Conservancy in Eastern Brunswick County, in eastern NC. The preserve is 17424 acres . Long leaf Pine Savannas and carnivorous plants like Venus flytrap and Pitcher plants. (No they will not eat you). When I was there in Sept 2015 there was a huge verity of wild flowers and orchids. I did not see any really swampy areas but there are muddy patches and after a good rain it might be more swampy. The preserve is open year-round during daylight hours.
GPS Address: 1000 Green Swamp Rd. NW // Supply NC 28462 (approximate google map address)
From Wilmington follow US 17 south to Supply, NC. At the intersection of HWY 211 (there is a Hardees’ and Kangaroo gas station at this intersection) turn right and follow HWY 211 north for 5 miles. The parking area for the trail head will be on the right; there is a small parking area sign just before the turn off. A kiosk at the trail head gives you more information about the preserve. There is a lake beside the parking area at the turn off.
Parking: Small gravel sand lot at the trail head. SLOW down turning in, low shoulder.
Difficulty: There is one trail that takes you through several savannas in the Green Swamp. It is a mile and half out-and-back. It is primitive, but marked with red diamond markers. The trail is flat and a small portion of the trail is boardwalk through thick shrubs.
Kind of photos: Lake, wild flowers, tall pine, grassy meadows, one of the few places where you can see Carnivorous plants. Landscape. Close up lens for flowers if that is your thing.
